Behold, ladies and gentlemen, what I have spent the better part of July working on.
Surveying his celestial domain, the King of All Cosmos realizes that the heavens lack a certain something. Something kind of smelly, kind of awkward. He dispatches the Prince to Earth to roll up any and all things Otaku! Take a look at that katamari- if you dig anime/manga/games at all, you'll probably find something (or multiple somethings) you recognize!
Sketching this thing was a snap. Inking, less so- spent a good week just on the katamari alone. Coloring is what really kicked my ass- this thing contains all kinds of different materials, surfaces, textures and colors, and keeping it all straight was an EXERCISE. I've looked over it eighteen or nineteen times now and haven't found any blank areas, though, so maybe we'll be okay!
This will be my central piece at Otakon 2005. I'll be selling prints of it at my table (Island M- come on by and say howdy!), but more to the point, I'll have a 24"x36" poster of it available on the Art Auction. That's HUGE, folks- for reference, the Prince in the preview image was taken from the working .PSD. COMPARE AND CONTRAST!
Woo! Things I recognize (and so many more I don't). Really nice job on handling all of the different textures. I can't imagine how long it must have taken to paint all of that, but it looks great.
Congrats on getting a table, dude- can't BELIEVE how quickly they sold out.
I usually go to Otakon as part of a group of 12 or so artists; we're all pretty much in Island M (last island in the middle row). Just look for the guy who a)isn't an Asian girl and b)doesn't speak with a French accent and that'll probably be me XD.
Coloring took somewhere around a week, from flatting to finished shading. It was all fairly easy- there's just SO MUCH to color, is all.
The most time-consuming item was the King of All Cosmos' headgear. Spent somewhere around eight hours on just that one area. I finally had to just settle for KINDA GOOD- this thing's gotta get off to my poster guy by Saturday. Still, after watching the KD opening and ending movies, it looks like even Namco fudges the perspective where the KoAC's weird head is concerned, so I'm not TOO broken-hearted about it XD.
Good lord, I haven't seen a composition this intense in ages. And there's so much awesome random in there, Ebichu, a dejiko hat, a prinny, luffy's hat, etc etc, each thing makes me smile. Most people would cop out on the objects stuck to the katamari but you went the full mile/s. So-damn- AWESOME. XD
I recognise Luffy's hat, a PS2, Sakura's magic staff, TOTORO!, Haruko's Moped from FLCL, a Dragonball, and a squished Hamtaro.
But that's it.. I'm not as big a fan of anime that I used to be, so I haven't kept up with more recent stuff..
GREAT WORK! This explains why it's been two months since your last deviation..
You are superkeen! I'd not have the patience for something like that these days..
